Folk Village (TMII)


Generally called 'Taman Mini', the folk village is referred to as a beautiful small park of Indonesia, which was built at the proposal of Mrs. Ibu Tien Suharto, wife of former president Suharto. Ever since, this particular place has become a busy place to visit in Jakarta that has not so many tourists attraction, so as to take a priority position on the list of tourist courses and a place for school children to study.
"You can understand all about Indonesia here." reads a sign board in the park, which is effectuated by exhibiting almost everything from the 27 provinces of the nation on a vast land area of more than 100 ha - their culture, housing, and costumes - at a glance. The center of the park is occupied by an artificial lake, in which man-made islands are decorated that look like the map of Indonesia. There also is a Bali-style museum where wedding costumes of each part of the nation, Wayang (traditional art performance which is a kind of shadow performance) and dolls, traditional musical instruments, and arts are displayed.

Independence Tower (Monas)

The Tower stands in the center of Merdeka Square which is located in JL.Tamrin, the heart of Jakarta, The architecture that demonstrates the balance between the negative as expressed by the base and the positive as expressed by the tower was built to commemorate the independence of the nation, which was gained on August 17, 1945, culminates with its height of 137 m and its top coated with flame-shaped gold. The gold-coated flame with 34 of pure gold was added up to 50 in 1995 on the occasion of fiftieth anniversary of its independence. At the top of the tower is a lookout where one can see the sea in the distance and the basement floor is decorated, in a panorama, with the process toward the independence from the prehistory era through ancient kingdoms, rules of the Netherlands and Japan. Upstairs is the "independence declaration" that was made public by President Sukarno and Vice President Hata as well as their voice of declaration that visitors can hear.

The Monas Tower of the present was started to be built. at the instruction of President Sukarno, by architect Soedarsono and professor Rooseno on August 17, 1961, on the occasion of the nineteenth anniversary of the nation's independence, leaving a turning point in the nation's architecture.

Merdeka Squre

With Monas Tower at its center, the square is erected based on Washing Square in a radoal pattern, combined with lawns and woods, to be a resting place for the citizens of Jakarta. Every Sunday morning the place is congested with those who run, ride bicycles, and practice Taekwondo. This is a toll-free park which is good to take pictures, and thus always haunted by many visitors.

Great Islam Temple (Mesjid Istiqlal)

Where more than 90 percent of the population is Islam, there are many Islam temples at any places in Indonesia, among which the largest and most beautiful is this temple which is the largest in South East Asia and the third largest in the world.
This huge-sized modern building, whose construction was started in 1961 under the Sukarno administration and completed in 1978 under the Suharto administration, is a symbolic monument expressing that Indonesia is an Islamic nation. It has a structure of many large pillars and round tower and sharp steel tower, the basic architectural structure of Islam temple. Around one each Friday, many Islam followers are praying in this Moslem and the President of the nation is participating in the pray during Levaran.

National Museum (Musium Nasional)

Started to construct in 1862 under the colonial rule of the Netherlands and completed in 1967, the museum was first called "Bataviaacsh Genootschap van Kjnsten en Wetenschappen" (Committed of Indonesian Culture-Loving the Netherlands). In 1979 the name was changed into the present name, "Indonesian National Museum" with added exhibits. Since 1971 when Thai King Churarong Korun sent the bronze elephant statue as a gift that was placed in the front garden, this is also dubbed by the public as elephant museum (Museum Gajah).

The exhibition articles range from archeological excavations (Buddhist statues and stone monuments from the Buddhist and Hindi culture during the fifth to fifth century) such as tools of the pre-history age, sculls of the Java man (duplication) to stone axes, old ceramics, animal bones, leather-made tools, currencies (old currencies of the ancient times through the colonial ages to modern times and those of many other countries, other historic articles (articles left by foreign forces such as Portugal, the Netherlands, Great Britain, China), maps (a variety of maps: cultural articles, housing, costumes, fixtures, musical instruments, and so on of various regions, cultural articles), ceramics (those brought from China, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Europe for trade), paintings (basic Bali paintings, modern Indonesian paintings, and works of Western painters). On the second floor there is a special room for articles made of gold.
As such, this is a place where to understand the colors, characteristic features, and cultures of the whole areas of Indonesia.

Taman Safari

" Puncak", where Taman Safari is located, is referred to as "top" in Indonesian, and is actually seated in a high land with an altitude of 1,000 above the sea level. It takes about two hours to get to the place where it is cool around the year by bus from Jakarta, with a lot of congestion on the weekend,
Situated at the center of " Puncak", Taman Safari is serving the visitors with the composure by showing over 150 species of animals left to the status of the nature in the ever cool temperature. From the entrance, visitors can have a look around in a safari buses or own cars while feeding the animals with foods (but taking off the vehicles is banned.). However, it banned to give foodstuff to the wild animals, as it is dangerous.
After a tour around the safari, visitors can take off the cars and pictures at the mini zoo along with the wild animals (young tigers, leopards, and so on). Especially, orangutan is a popular model to take pictures with, also can watch the elephant show and ride on the back of elephant and camel. Furthermore, visitors can be served with the swimming pool, cable car, mini train, rest rooms, and restaurants.
