Indonesia is a nation having the most islands in the world as well as the tribes with far more than 300 different ethnic groups, attributing it to an exhibition hall of tribes, among which the largest one is Java tribe and is followed by Sunda Tribe, both resides in Java island. In this sense, the nation can be referred to a treasury for the cultural anthropology with each tribe preserving their own unique culture and way of living. The major features of the major tribes are described as follows.


Java Island

Java Tribe
 

Mostly living in east and central Java, Java Tribe is the biggest one in the nation, which consist of 75 percent of the Island's 115 million people. The tribe is famous for building the giant ancient kingdom, Majapahit, and the first president Soekarno and the former president Soeharto are from the Java tribe.

Java Tribe is well known for being courteous and sincere, henceforce, the people do not lose smile from the face and kindness, with one of their conspicuous natures being to solve any problems and conflicts through dialogue.

The language used by the tribe is somewhat complex in its expression as to have the expression of respect, equality, and disrespect, which are used in consideration whether communication counterpart appears in the sentence or of his or her age and social status. Depending on the social status, wordings are used differently for the friends or the younger, those of the low social status and those of the higher status, and the languages for these two different classes are used in combination in accordance to the age and social status of the dialogue counterpart, constituting a more complicate pattern of the use of the language.

One of the long traditional customs of the tribe is to the spirit of mutual cooperation and assistance (Gotong Royong) whereby to solve all the civil affairs through discussions.

The tribe has various types of houses in terms of materials used and their shapes. The pillars and girders can be made of coconut trees or teak trees, walls are erected with sliced bamboos tied to each others, timber plates or cement bricks, roofs built with dried coconut leaves or roofing tiles. In spite of the variety of building materials used, the houses are built in a certain fixed form, by which the shape of the houses is in a rectangular type. Inside of the house is divided into a few small rooms that are portioned with bamboo-made walls that are easily movable, with drawer doors but no windows. Sun right come from the holes of the crack in the walls or in the roof. For the Java Tribe, the size and the shape of the roof is a kind of symbol representing one's social status and dignity. The people have been known for strong religious belief, that has been much affected by the traditional Javanesse culture.



Sunda Tribe
 

The tribe, living mostly in West Java, is, like Java Tribe, known to be very courteous and sincere, with its population of about 20 million, the size next to Java Tribe. They are of mild character, while being talkative and especially the namely luxuries.

The tribe has traditionally been much engaged in rice cultivation, however, are also active in cultivating tea and rubber with large plantations developed in the central part the island. The types of their house are not much different from that of Java Tribe.

Their religion is Islam, whose rules of which are sternly observed. (five prayers a day, fasting during the month of Ramadan)
